The story takes place in a near future, at the end of the 19th century. A group of American billionaires decide to build an artificial island, powered by propellers, to escape the constraints of earthly life. The island is named Standard-Island and is home to a population of 12,000 people, including businessmen, scientists, artists, and musicians.
